PETRILLO, RAMIREZ SET RECORDS AS MIDDLESEX COLLEGE BASEBALL CONTINUES HISTORIC SEASON
Middlesex College Baseball has been enjoying a historic season and now two of their top players have added their names to the Colts record books.
Christian Petrillo (Freshman/North Brunswick, NJ) set the single season stolen base record when he recorded his 35th stolen base and Braden Ramirez (Freshman/Middlesex, NJ) set the single season RBI record with 47.
With 14 games remaining in the regular season plus the playoffs, both players have the opportunity to put significant distance between themselves and the previous record holders.
"I am very proud of both Christian and Braden for reaching these milestones," said Head Baseball Coach CJ Mooney. "These records were not set on accident. It is a testament to both of their work ethics and overall drive to be a successful collegiate student athlete. It has been a pleasure to coach both Braden and Christian. It has certainly made my job as a coach that much easier when you have two athletes in your lineup with their level of talent."
Petrillo's record-setting swipe came against Brookdale Community College and topped the previous mark, which was set by Michael Russo who stole 34 bases in 2019. Petrillo has only been caught five times on the season and has recorded multiple stolen bases in ten games. He was a perfect four-for-four in steals against Ocean County College on March 18. That was part of a streak of six consecutive games where the centerfielder recorded multiple stolen bases.
Petrillo, who has signed a National Letter of Intent to continue his career at NCAA Division II Goldey-Beacom College, currently leads the nation in stolen bases among NJCAA Division III schools.
Ramirez has been producing runs at an incredible rate for the Colts all season long. His record-setting 47th RBI came in a 22-11 win over Brookdale Community College on April 15 in a showdown of two of the top teams in Region XIX.
The freshman outfielder is currently fourth in the nation on the NJCAA Division III level for RBis and has been a huge factor in Middlesex College's run production, which has been among the best in the country. Currently, Middlesex is sixth in the country in runs scored and ninth in hits.
Ramirez has had 13 multi-RBI games with a high of seven RBIs in a win over Salem County College. He is batting .384 in 40 games with six home runs and 36 runs scored and has already extended his record-setting RBI total to 49. Ramirez has also added 12 stolen bases.
The previous record for RBIs in a season was held by Brenden Davis and Anthony Parente who had 46 RBIs each in 2008 and 2016, respectively.
Middlesex College Baseball is currently 26-15 and has been drawing attention in the national NJCAA polls all season long.
