Middlesex College baseball belted five home runs in a wild first game and were powered by a stellar pitching performance from Drew Lukachyk the next day as the Colts swept a key two-game series from Camden CC.
Middlesex won the first game 18-16 and topped the Cougars 9-4 on the back end of the home-and-home series. Middlesex and Camden each received votes in this week's NJCAA D3 National Baseball Poll.
In the first game, Middlesex carried a slim10-9 lead into the bottom of the sixth inning, but Camden rallied for seven runs to take what looked to be a commanding 16-0 lead.
However, the Colts responded by scoring a combined eight runs over in the seventh and eighth innings while Michael Canavesio (Sophomore/Middlesex, NJ) shut the door on the explosive Cougars offense.
Canavesio hurled 2.2 scoreless one-hit innings to hold the Camden offense down, picking up the win in the process. Camden had scored a run in every inning prior to Canavesio taking the mound.
Middlesex had a number of offensive stars in the game as six Colts registered multi-hit games. Tyler Stallwood (Freshman/Flemington, NJ) and Jake Graci (Freshman/Kendall Park, NJ) led the way for Middlesex. Stallwood went 4-5 with two doubles, a home run, two runs scored and four RBIs while Graci went 3-5 with two home runs, two runs scored and six RBIs.
Brett Lukachyk (Sophomore/Woodbridge, NJ) and Conor Drury (Sophomore/North Brunswick, NJ) also hit home runs for Middlesex. Lukachyk also had a three-RBI day for the Colts.
The two teams bounced back the next day and although the Colts bats stayed hot, Camden was shut down by Brett Lukachyk, who pitched six innings of one-hit scoreless ball with 10 strikeouts.
Drury had another good day for Middlesex, registering three hits with a run and an RBI. Angel Deaza (Sophomore/Elizabeth, NJ) had a hit, an RBI, two runs scored and two walks for the Colts as well.
Bobby Bressler closed out the win on the mound for Middlesex, who moved to 25-16 on the season.
The Colts have now won four straight and have just two Region 19 series left in the regular season. They will host Montgomery CC in a doubleheader Friday in their next game. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00PM.
