EDMOND'S DUNK AND STEAL IN CLOSING SECONDS SEALS 55-53 COLTS WIN OVER #8 DUTCHESS CC
Jakin Edmond converted a dunk with six seconds left and stole a pass on the ensuing possession to seal a thrilling 55-52 Middlesex College win over Dutchess CC.
The Colts (9-2) led by double digits for much of the game, but Dutchess (10-2) cut the lead to just a single point with 1:22 left in the game, setting up Edmond's heroics in the waning seconds.
It was the lowest scoring game of the season for both teams. Dutchess had averaged 88 points per game coming into the contest by the Colts strong defense held the Falcons to 35 points below their season average.
The game was physical and low-scoring from the start and it looked like the Colts would carry a double-digit lead into the half. Dutchess hit a three-pointer with 13 seconds left in the half as the game went into the break with Middlesex leading 31-24.
Middlesex extended the margin to 10 points, leading the Falcons 44-34 with 11:20 left, but a 13-0 run by Dutchess put the Falcons up 47-44 with just over five minutes left. A three-pointer by Damien Downes (Freshman/South Brunswick, NJ) ended the run and tied the game back up.
Savion Pressley (Sophomore/Woodbridge, NJ) hit a jumper on the next possession to give the Colts back the lead. A putback by Jahmere Glover (Sophomore/Irvington, NJ) and layup by Edmond extended the Middlesex lead to six with three minutes left, but two quick baskets by the Falcons cut the lead back down to two with 1:30 left.
With 1:22 left and the Colts hanging on to a 53-51 lead, Middlesex was called for a technical foul, giving the Falcons two free throws and the ball. They converted one free throw to bring the game to 53-52.
A missed layup by Middlesex gave Dutchess the ball back with 30 seconds and a chance to hold for the final shot and the win. A foul was called on the Colts on a driving layup with 6.5 seconds left, but both free throws were missed and the Colts took over possession with a chance to seal the victory.
Inbounding from underneath the Dutchess basket, Middlesex drew up a beautiful inbounds play and Downes hit a streaking Edmond who dunked the pass home to put the Colts up 55-52.
With 4.2 seconds remaining on the game clock, Dutchess inbounded the ball, but the ensuing pass was stolen by Edmond to seal the win for the Colts.
Middlesex returns to action Saturday when they travel to Lackawana CC for Region 19 matchup. Game time is set for 3:00PM.
