FOUAD, LOPEZ LEAD MIDDLESEX MENS SOCCER PAST DREW
Claudio Lopez and Marwan Fouad scored in each half and Jayson Vassallo and Jeremy Madrid combined to make eight saves as Middlesex College topped Drew University's JV squad, 2-1, at Thomas Edison Park.
Middlesex moves to 4-4-2 on the season and has won three of their last four games.
Lopez (Freshman/Dunellen, NJ) got the Colts on the scoreboard when a beautiful pass from Matias Barreiros (Freshman/Sayreville, NJ) put him free along the left side. Lopez patiently settled the ball and beat Drew's keeper for the game's first goal.
Drew didn't muster very many scoring chances in the first half, but Vassaallo saved all three shots he faced in the half.
The pace of the game picked up in the second half and the Colts extended their lead to 2-0.
Fouad (Freshman/South Brunswick, NJ) ripped a beautiful shot from long distance that was too tough to handle for Drew's keeper. The ball went through his hands and bounced into the corner for Fouad's fourth goal of the year.
Drew finally broke through for a goal of their own with 12 minutes left and applied pressure consistently for the remainder of the game, but the Colts defense wouldn't crack. Madrid played the second half in goal for Middlesex and had five saves in the half.
Middlesex has a short turnaround as they will travel to Delaware County Community College Thursday for a 3:30PM match.
