McCarthy Excels as the Lady Colts Sweep of RCSJ-Cumberland
Kaitlynne McCarthy (Woodbridge H.S.) pitched 2 complete games (both 5 innings) as the Lady Colts defeated RCSJ-Cumberland by scores of 20-5 and 10-1 on Saturday in Edison. The Colts took over sole possession of second place with the victories as they closed out their regular season by winning 9 out of their last 10 games, and finished with a record of 14-14.
In game one the Lady Colts fell behind 5-0 after the top of the first inning, but came storming back with 5 runs of their own in the bottom of the first inning. They followed that up with a 10 run outburst in the second inning to put the game out of reach and record a 20-5 victory secured a second place finish in the conference behind league leading RCSJ-Gloucester. Jessica Freeman (Carteret H.S.) had a 2-run triple in the first inning, and Chloe Oblepias (Carteret H.S.) added a 2-run inside the park homerun for the Colts. Freeman also had an RBI double in the second inning outburst, and McCarthy added a 2-run triple and a grand slam homerun to help her cause. Alyssa Dima (Manville H.S.) was 3-3 with 3 RBI's, and Oblepias and Freeman also had 3 RBI's for the Colts. Abigail Jason (J.P. Stevens H.S.) added 2 hits, 2 runs scored, and an RBI. Madison Buttitta (J.F. Kennedy H.S.), Jennah Schiraldo (Carteret H.S.), and Angelina Amato also had RBI's as the Colts banged out 16 hits. McCarhty went the distance, striking out 3 and while allowing 10 hits.
In the nightcap, McCarthy again went the distance (5 innings), allowing 7 hits while recording 3 strikeouts. Buttitta led the offense, going 3-4 with a triple and 3 RBI's. Jason added 2 hits, 2 runs scored, and an RBI. McCarthy, Freeman, Schiraldo, Oblepias, and Dima all contributed RBi's.
The Lady Colts currently have 7 players hitting over .300, and have a team batting average of .331.
With the victories, the Lady Colts finished in second place behind league leading RCSJ-Gloucester, and have received the #2 seed in this weekends' double-elimination conference tournament. Their first round opponent will be #3 seeded RCSJ-Cumberland on Saturday. All games will be played at RCSJ-Gloucester.
