COLTS SOFTBALL MOVES TO 4-0 AS MCCARTHY KEYS SWEEP OF MONROE

Kaitlynne McCarthy hit a two-out, walkoff single in the bottom of the seventh and pitched a solid seven innings to lead Middlesex College a 3-2 win over in the first game of a doubleheader sweep over Monroe CC.

The Colts won Game 2, 18-10 in five innings to move to 4-0 on the season. The victories snapped a nine-game winning streak for Monroe (10-4).

In Game 1, McCarthy (Sophomore/Port Reading, NJ) tossed a complete game, allowing two earned runs while striking out six. She also drove in Jennah Schiraldo (Sophomore/Carteret, NJ), who singled to start the inning.

Olivia Tirso (Freshman/Elizabeth, NJ) collected three hits, including a double and an RBI, to lead the offense. Destiny Gonzalez (Freshman/Sayreville, NJ) and Chloe Oblepias (Sophomore/Carteret, NJ) each collected two hits for the Colts.

In Game 2, Middlesex built a 4-0 lead through two, but fell behind 5-4 going into the bottom of the fourth. The Colts erupted for 14 runs oveer the final two innings to end the game via mercy rule.

Alyssa Dima (Sophomore/Manville, NJ) was the starting pitcher in Game 2, throwing 3.2 innings while allowing three earned runs.

Oblepias came on in relief to get out of a jam in the fourth and picked up the win in the process. McCarthy pitched the fifth inning, fanning two.

McCarthy led he 14 hit attack with 3 hits, including a double and 4 RBI's. Hannah Cotayo (Freshman/Carteret, NJ) recorded two hits, two RBI's, and four runs scored. Abigail Jason (Sophomore/Edison, NJ) had two hits, two RBIs and two runs scored. Tirso and Oblepias had two hits each, and scored two and three runs, respectively. Julie Davis (Sophomore/South Plainfield, NJ) was the fifth Colt with two hits, while also adding a double, and RBI and two runs scored. Gonzalez and Schiraldo added RBIs to the Colts attack.

The Colts are now 4-0 on the season and will have a rematch with Monroe CC Saturday at Monroe. The Express had entered their doubleheader with Middlesex on a nine-game winning streak before dropping two to the Colts. First pitch for Game 1 is set for 12:00.

Through four games, the Colts have collected 42 hits and scored 36 runs on 25 RBIs. Hits leaders include Tirso with eight and Oblepias with seven. Tirso and McCarthy have each recorded six RBI's, followed by Davis with four. Tirso, Schiraldo, and Cotayo have each scored six runs, followed by Jason with five. Jason leads the team with two sacrifice bunts, and Gonzalez leads in stolen bases with three. Seven starters are currently hitting over .300.
