MCCARTHY HURLS NO-HITTER AS COLTS SWEEP LEHIGH CARBON

Kaitlynne McCarthy (Woodbridge H.S.) fired a no-hitter in Game 1 and a complete game in Game 2 as Middlesex College swept Lehigh Carbon 8-0 and 14-5.

At 6-1, the Colts currently have the best record among NJCAA Division III softball teams in Region XIX.

In Game 1, McCarthy was dominant and needed only 57 pitches in the five-inning affair to tame the Cougars (4-4), who entered the contest with a .382 team batting average.

Chloe Oblepias (Freshman/Carteret, NJ) had a clutch two-out, two-RBI single in the first inning to get the Colts rolling. She collected two hits and scored a run in the game.

Freshman catcher Jennah Schiraldo (Carteret, NJ) added three hits, scored two runs, and had an RBI and Abigail Jason (Freshman/Edison, NJ) had two hits, including a double, and scored two runs with two RBIs.

Olivia Tirso (Freshman/Elizabeth, NJ) contributed two RBIs to the Colts attack. Destiny Gonzalez (Freshman/Sayreville, NJ) collected a double and scored a run. The Colts had 10 hits in the contest, and played flawless defense.

In game two, McCarthy once again pitched a five-inning complete game.

The righty allowed three earned runs on five hits, while striking out seven as the Colts completed the sweep of the Cougars by a score of 14-5.

Schiraldo led the way on offense with three more hits, including a double and six RBIs. She scored three runs as well.

Jason also added two more hits, including a triple and an RBI, and she scored four runs. Julie Davis (Freshman/South Plainfield, NJ) added two hits and an RBI, and Tirso contributed a triple and three RBIs. McCarthy also helped her cause with two RBIs, as the Colts amassed 11 hits.

The Colts finish the day with a 6-1 overall record, and 2-0 in Region 19. They are back in action on Saturday, traveling to Camden CC with first pitch of the doubleheader set for 12 noon.
