MIDDLESEX TOPS SUSSEX 5-3, GAME 2 SUSPENDED FOR RAIN

Kaitlynne McCarthy tossed a complete game, striking out 11 and allowing six hits, as Middlesex College defeated Sussex by a score of 5-3 in Game 1 of a scheduled doubleheader in Edison to move to 13-1 on the season.

Game 2 was halted by rain in the second inning with the Colts up 1-0 and will be resumed on May 3.

McCarthy only allowed one earned run and she did not walk a batter. In 65 innings pitched this season, McCarthy has only walked nine batters while striking out 66.

The Colts banged out 10 hits in the game, including multiple hit games from Hannah Cotayo (Freshman/Carteret, NJ), Jennah Schiraldo (Sophomore/Carteret, NJ), and McCarthy.

Olivia Tirso (Sophomore/Elizabeth, NJ) and Abigail Jason (Sophomore/Edison, NJ) both hit doubles and collected RBI's. Cotayo and Chloe Oblepias (Sophomore/Carteret, NJ) also added RBI's to help the Colts offense. The Colts left seven baserunners stranded in the game.

Although they committed three errors in the contest, the Colts also turned in some stellar defensive plays to thwart Sussex rallies. Schiraldo, Oblepias, Tirso, Jason, and Destiny Gonzalez (Freshman/Sayreville, NJ) were all involved with the superb defensive efforts.

Colts pitcher Alyssa Dima (Sophomore/Manville, NJ) was named the Garden State Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week. She is the third Colt to receive weekly honors this season, following Kaitlynne McCarthy and Jennah Schiraldo.
