Middlesex College softball continued their fantastic season with a sweep of Union County College at home to move to 17-3 on the season.
In Game 1, Kaitlynne McCarthy turned in another stellar performance in the circle, limiting Union (1-18) to just one hit in a 10-1 win.
The sophomore lefty struck out six and is now 11-3 on the season with a 1.81 ERA. Middlesex currently leads the nation among NJCAA Division III schools with a 2.06 team ERA.
The Colts had many offensive standouts in Game 1, including Jennah Schiraldo (Sophomore/Carteret, NJ) who had two hits, a double and three RBIs. Chloe Oblepias (Sophomore/Carteret, NJ) had three RBIs while McCarthy drove in two to help her cause.
Olivia Tirso (Freshman/Elizabeth, NJ) scored two runs and Destiny Gonzalez (Freshman/Sayreville, NJ) hit her fourth double of the season.
In between games, Middlesex held a ceremony to honor the team's nine sophomores and their families. The sophomores recognized were McCarthy, Schiraldo, Oblepias, Julie Davis (Sophomore/South Plainfield, NJ), Abigail Jason (Sophomore/Edison, NJ), Katelyn Herman (Sophomore/Fords, NJ) and Alyssa Dima (Sophomore/Manville, NJ).
In Game 2, Middlesex jumped out to a 9-0 lead through three innings before the game was stopped when an injury to a Union player left them without enough players to continue. As per rule, the game is recorded as a forfeit win for the Colts and individual statistics are not recorded for the game.
The Colts are currently in second place in Region XIX and have a pivotal matchup against first place Brookdale scheduled for tomorrow (4/26) at home. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30pm.
