MIDDLESEX SPLITS WITH RCSJ-GLOUCESTER IN REGION XIX DISTRICT FINAL, GAME 3 TO BE HELD TUESDAY
Facing elimination, Middlesex College scored seven runs with two outs in the bottom of fifth inning of Game 2 to come from behind to beat RCSJ-Gloucester 10-6 in Game 2 in the Region XIX North Atlantic District Finals.
The Colts (22-7) dropped Game 1, 5-0, and will play a decisive third game on Tuesday with a trip to the NJCAA Division III National Tournament on the line.
In Game 1, the Roadrunners (37-18) scored four runs in the first to take an early lead on the Colts. Kaitlynne McCarthy (Sophomore/Port Reading, NJ) held the Roadrunners in check after that, but the Colts offense was kept off the board. Middlesex managed just four hits in Game 1.
In a must-win Game 2, Middlesex scored first, but the Roadrunners rallied for three unearned runs to take a 3-1 lead.
With the game getting late and the Colts facing elimination, Middlesex stormed back to score seven runs with two outs in the fifth inning against two Roadrunner pitchers.
Chloe Oblepias (Sophomore/Carteret, NJ) and Kaitlynne McCarthy (Sophomore/Port Reading, NJ) each delivered a two-run singles as part of the rally.
Katelyn Herman (Sophomore/Fords, NJ) and Olivia Tirso (Freshman/Elizabeth, NJ) also had multi-hit games for the Colts.
McCarthy, who led the nation in ERA among NJCAA Division III pitchers coming into today, was once again a workhorse for the Colts. She pitched every inning of the doubleheader and picked up her 15th win of the season in Game 2.
