MCCARTHY, JASON, MULDOWNEY HONORED WITH REGION XIX SOFTBALL AWARDS

MCCARTHY, JASON, MULDOWNEY HONORED WITH REGION XIX SOFTBALL AWARDS

Kaitlynne McCarthy was named the Region XIX Pitcher of the Year, Abigail Jason earned Second Team All-Region XIX honors and Head Coach Jim MUldowney was named Region XIX Coach of the Year in awards voted on by the region Head Coaches.

The awards come in light of a historic season in which the Colts finished 23-7 and won the Region XIX North Atlantic B District Championship, qualifying for the NJCAA Division III National Championship in the process.

McCarthy garnered honors as the Region's top hurler after a dominant sophomore season in the circle. A workhorse lefty, McCarthy was fifth in the country among qualifying pitchers with a 1.96 ERA. Her 146 innings pitched topped Region XIX with only three other pitchers in the country throwing more innings than her.

McCarthy went 16-7 on the season and threw complete games in all 20 games she started this season. McCarthy threw a no-hitter against Region XIX playoff qualifier Lehigh Carbon and also twirled a one-hitter against Union County College.

Jason had a tremendous season for the Colts at third base and at the plate. Jason hit safely in 23 of the 28 games she played this season and had a streak of six straight multi-hit games early in the season. There were only two games all season where Jason failed to reach base.

A sophomore from Edison, NJ, Jason batted .416 (37-89) with a team-leading 35 runs scored. She was a perfect 7-7 in steals this season.

In his second season at the helm of the Colts, Muldowney oversaw an incredible rise to national prominence for a Colts squad that didn't even field a team two years ago.

Managing a roster of 11 players all season, Muldowney's Colts jumped out to a 13-1 start to the season. Middlesex was ranked as high as 11th in the NJCAA National Division III Softball Poll and a .767 winning percentage, which was the highest in Region XIX this season.

Middlesex College was the #3 seed heading into the North Atlantic B District Championship and faced off against second-seeded RCSJ-Gloucester with a trip to the National Tournament on the line. After dropping the first game of the best-of-three series, Muldowney rallied his squad to two straight wins, catapulting the Colts to the National Tournament for the first time in decades.

Middlesex College softball grabbed the #6 seed in the National Tournament and will face off against North Dakota NCS at 2:00pm Thursday.
