Camden County College
Middlesex College has gotten to work defending their 2022 Region Championship and are off to a 3-1 start after sweeping Camden CC by scores of 17-3 and 6-1 in their home opener in Edison.
The Colts scored eight runs in each of the first two innings in the five-inning opener, and then had to use a six-run sixth inning for the come from behind victory in the nightcap. Marissa Lugo (Freshman/Iselin, NJ) tossed complete games in both ends of the doubleheader, allowing only two earned runs on the day.
Lugo, Summer Ramirez (Freshman/South Brunswick, NJ), and Carla Seyfarth (Freshman/South Brunswick, NJ) all collected three hits in game one. Seyfarth and Madison Szatkowski (FreshmanSayreville, NJ) both hit their first collegiate homeruns, and both also had three RBIs. Ramirez, Rebecca Abbatemarco, and Kaylen Tavarez (Freshman/Edison, NJ) all contributed two RBIs to the offensive explosion. Lugo allowed seven hits and registered four strikeouts to earn the five-inning complete game victory.
Runs were hard to come by in game two, as both teams were locked in a 0-0 tie after five innings. Camden scored an unearned run in the top of the 6th, but the Colts rallied for 6 runs in the bottom of the inning to complete the sweep. Seyfarth and Jennah Schiraldo (Sophomore/Carteret, NJ) had multiple hit games, including doubles and an RBI each, to lead the attack. Ramirez, Rebecca Abbatemarco (Freshman/Edison, NJ), and Rebecca Ortiz (Freshman/South Plainfield, NJ) also collected RBI's for the Colts. Lugo allowed seven hits, and no earned runs, to register her second win of the day, and improve her record to 3-1 on the year.
The Colts finish the first week of the 2023 season with a 3-1 record. They have amassed 50 hits, including 14 extra base hits, and scored 45 runs in the four games.
The Colts will be in action on Tuesday, April 4, away at County College of Morris. Game time is 3:30pm.
