RACKETT POWERS #10 MIDDLESEX IN SWEEP OF LEHIGH CARBON
It took a few innings for the Middlesex College softball bats to wake up in a weekend doubleheader against Lehigh Carbon, but once they did, they didn't stop producing.
Middlesex, ranked #10 in the latest NJCAA Division III national poll, swept Lehigh Carbon by scores of 9-1 and 12-0 to move to 4-2 on the season.
In Game 1, Middlesex and Lehigh Carbon were locked in a pitchers' duel through the first four innings. The game went to the bottom of the fifth where the Colts erupted for eight runs to capture the win via mercy rule.
Madison Szarkowski (Sophomore/Sayreville, NJ) went 3-4 in the game with a run and an RBI. Sarah Ohnmeiss (Freshman/South Plainfield, NJ) had a big hit in the eight-run rally in the fifth, delivering a long two-run triple to set up the winning scenario.
Ohnmeiss and Makenzie Marsh (Freshman/Middlesex, NJ) each had two RBIs in support of Madison Rackett (Freshman/Woodbridge, NJ). Rackett pitched a complete game and allowed just one unearned run on two hits to pick up the win.
In Game 2, the Cougars kept Middlesex at bay for the first two innings, but on the second time through the lineup, the Colts went back to their slugging ways.
Middlesex scored 10 runs in the third inning and added two more in the fourth on the way to their fourth win of the year.
Marsh again was stellar at the plate, going 3-4 with two runs and three RBIs. Ohnmeiss went 2-3 with a double, run and RBI and Simirrah Ortiz (Freshman/Woodbridge, NJ) went 1-2 with a double, two runs and an RBI.
Rackett again was phenomenal on both sides of the field. At the plate, the freshmen went 3-4 with a triple, two runs and an RBI. She also worked the first four innings in the circle and allowed just two hits and no runs to pick up her second win of the day.
Alice Melvin (Freshman/Milltown, NJ) pitched a perfect top of the fifth to close out the win for the Colts.
Middlesex is scheduled to return to action on Saturday when they travel to SUNY-Orange for a doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00PM.
