#10 MIDDLESEX COLLEGE BASEBALL TOPS RARITAN VALLEY CC; REACHES 30 WINS FOR FIFTH STRAIGHT SEASON
Elvys Quezada and Anthony Singh combined to throw six innings of two-hit shutout ball and Middlesex College used a late game rally to top NJCAA Division II Raritan Valley 8-7.
The win bolstered the Colts record to 30-15 on the season marking the fifth straight season Middlesex has reached the 30-win mark. Additionally, the Colts had moved up to #10 in the latest NJCAA Division III National Poll, marking the fifth straight season they have been ranked among the top ten teams in the nation among Division III schools.
It looked like the game was going to be a high-scoring affair as both squads scored two runs in the first inning and Raritan Valley held a 5-4 lead through three innings. The Lions tacked on two more runs in the fourth to build a 7-4 lead, but the Colts stopped Raritan Valley's offense right there.
Singh and Quezada did not allow a run the rest of the way and Middlesex tied the game with a rally in the seventh. The game stayed tied until the bottom of the eighth when the Colts loaded the bases with two outs. With a 1-0 count and nowhere to put him, John Oranchak was hit by a pitch to force home the go-ahead run giving Middlesex their first lead of the game.
Quezada induced a ground out, fly out and comebacker in an easy 1-2-3 inning to nail down the victory for the Colts, who became the second team in Region 19, regardless of division, to reach 30 wins this season.
The only other Region 19 Division III team to reach 30 wins each of the past five seasons are is Brookdale CC with RCSJ-Gloucester likely to join that group with two more wins.
Jaime Tamayo had a fantastic day on offense for the Colts with 2 hits, 3 RBIs, a double and a run. Julian Collado also had 2 hits and scored 2 runs with a double. Michael Ramirez had a double, an RBI, a run scored and walked twice.
The Colts now prepare for their final regular season series of the year as they face Atlantic Cape CC this weekend. The series begins with a single nine-inning game on Friday at Atlantic Cape. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30PM.
